The Great Barrington Rudolf Steiner School, located in the beautiful Berkshires, is a thriving 40 year-old Waldorf School located on twenty acres of open and wooded land bordering the Green River in Western Massachusetts. Over 200 students from preschool through 8th grade are taught in large classrooms, handwork and woodwork studios, a science room and a spacious auditorium. Basketball and handball courts and open playing fields surround the school buildings. The old barn where the school began is now a 1,000 square foot school library.

The Business Manager of the GBRSS oversees and manages all the business functions of the school. Responsibilities include oversight of a $2.5 million budget; capital expenditures; staffing issues; risk management; legal issues and overall compliance of the school.
The position demands a proactive person who will constantly search out improvements to advance the mission and financial well-being of the school. The position is one of the two leadership positions in the school (along with the Faculty Administrator) and, as such, is expected to inspire and build a shared vision for operational excellence; improve systems, processes, ideas and methodologies to advance the financial health and stability of GBRSS.
The Business Manager of the GBRSS oversees the work of his/her administrative colleagues: Bookkeeper, Support Staff, Facilities Manager (Maintenance Supervisor), and (jointly with the Faculty Administrator) the Development Director. The Business Manager does not have any direct responsibilities with regard to pedagogical aspects of the school. The Business Manager is responsible to the Board of Trustees and work closely with their subsequent committees.

Goals and Objectives
Financial-
- Prepare periodic budgets, financial statements, payroll and supplemental reports.
- Participate in Finance Committee work, including quarterly financial statements for the Board and departmental budget versus actual income / expense reports.
- Prepares all reports necessary for yearly financial audit, including maintenance of fixed asset file.
Insurance
- Develop risk management policies and insurance coverage.
- Adopt and coordinate worker’s comp and unemployment insurance within legal constraints imposed by the state.
Contracts / Employees Benefits
- Prepare and review all employment and parent tuition contracts, in cooperation with a representative of the Council
- Participate in multi-stepped admissions process through presentation of contracts to new parents.
- Work with Tuition Assistance committee to ensure fair and equitable administration of allocated funds.
- Coordinate and maintain compensation packages for all employees.
Government and Legal Provisions
- Develop contracts within federal, state and local government agencies (to assure that all reports which guarantee the schools tax exempt status are prepared and completed in a timely manner).
- Ensure compliance with health regulations required by federal, state and local government agencies.
Communications
- Communicates information of financial or legal nature among all constituencies.
- Informs the Council Chair, Faculty Chair and Board President as needed.
- Participates in the Executive Committee meetings, preparing and providing information on parent contract changes.
Information Management
- Overseas the design, implementation, and maintenance of the school’s information management system.
Facilities
- Review and authorize all outside service worker contracts for the purchase and/or rental of property, equipment and supplies.
- General oversight of building and grounds maintenance.
