Parent/Toddler Circle at GBRSS – Once a week for eight weeks, the Great Barrington Rudolf Steiner School creates a circle for young children (ages 1 to 3 ½) and their parents, to experience firsthand the rhythms of a Waldorf kindergarten morning. In the cozy environment of an early childhood classroom, parents engage in home-like activities (such as baking bread) or make simple crafts, while their children help them or play nearby. Circle and story time reflect the world of nature and seasonal festivities. Led by Waldorf Early Childhood specialist Jo Valens (illustrator of The Waldorf Kindergarten Snack Book), Parent/Toddler Circle provides ample opportunity for Moms, Dads, grandparents and caregivers to share childrearing skills and concerns in community, supported by Valens’s 20 years of experience as a Waldorf Early Childhood teacher.

The public is invited to “Voice VIII – An Afternoon of Acapella”

Award-winning and world traveled groups entertain and help raise funds for GBRSS

(Berkshires, MA) March 27, 2011 – The Great Barrington Rudolf Steiner School (GBRSS) invites the public to “Voice VIII, An Afternoon of Acapella” on Sunday, April 10, 3:00pm at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center. Professional and Collegiate ensembles performing include the Amalgamates from Tuft University, the Conn Men and A Completely Different Note from the University of Connecticut, and Strike a Chord from Canaan NY. Voice VIII is in its eighth year as a fund-raising concert for the school. Tickets are $22 adults and $7 up to18 years. Call the Mahaiwe box office 413-528 0100 or GBRSS 413-528-4015 or www.gbrss.org.

Founded in 1984, the Amalgamates are Tufts University’s oldest coed a cappella group. With members from all over the world, the ‘Mates have a tradition of musical excellence represented by the current singers. Over the years, the group has performed at the National Portrait Gallery in London, Disney World, Rockefeller Center and Fenway Park and traveled to Spain, Jamaica, Paris, Dusseldorf, and many other places around the world. Their albums have won Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards (CARAs) ranging from Best Song to Best Soloist to Best Mixed Collegiate Album and they have also had songs on the annual Best of College A Cappella (BOCA) CDs. The ‘Mates are working on their twelfth album, and recently released a two-song EP entitled “Teaser”, of which the lead track, “Let It Die,” was selected as 2009’s sing six: sunny side up compilation by CASA. For more information, contact mates@tufts.edu.

The Conn Men and A Completely Different Note (CDN), are both all-male a capella groups at the University of Connecticut. The Conn Men were invited to perform at the White House in 2010, and, for the first time this year, each group had a song featured on the “Best of College A Capella” CD, or BOCA. UConn is one of only three schools to have multiple songs on the album. John DePalma, a senior and member of the Conn Men, said, “being on the CD is a validation of all the hard work the UConn a capella community does.” In the fall of 2001, R.J. Panda and Chris Dresko set out to change the face of a cappella at UConn by forming a group which excelled in musicality and performance presence. Individual vocal development, originality, musicality, and loyalty to the group are just a few of the qualities set in place and still upheld by the Conn Men.

Strike A Chord is a co-ed a cappella group with a varied repertoire of show tunes, doo-wop, pop music, funk, and gospel, with some comedy. The repertoire includes tunes by Sting, Stevie Wonder, Journey, The Nylons, The Beatles, Boyz 2 Men, George Michael, Peter Gabriel and many more. The group, of 6 to 8 people, has a positive and upbeat energy and has been performing for over ten years. They started on a tour Disney World, and now perform all over the East Coast of the US, Canada, and in Europe. At first singing cappella music for fun on the side, they eventually started adding more cappella to their repertoire, performing for smaller events and fund-raisers, and now tour professionally.
