The biannual GBRSS middle school circus is a fun-raiser for all ages. “Circus Coast to Coast” is a road trip of juggling, tumbling, twirling, clowning, balancing and jumping. Physical Education Director Krista Palmer is the creative director for the circus with the assistance of master clown, Laura Geilan. In addition to an academic curriculum of math, science, history, literature and more, the Circus Arts are part of the physical education curriculum in the middle school years at the Great Barrington Rudolf Steiner School. Through activities like tumbling and acrobatics children experience and gain an awareness of the space around them. When students feel comfortable moving in their bodies as well as extending into the space around them, their strength is felt both physically and emotionally. Through these activities, along with games and sports, children learn about one another, and the challenges that the world brings to them, gaining self-confidence as they learn. Capacities such as being flexible, leading a balanced life, helping and supporting others and juggling life’s tasks are exercised physically and emotionally as a child through the circus arts.

Master Clown Laura Geilen trained in dance at the Boston Conservatory of Music, has a B.A. in Human Services from Lesley University, and is a graduate of the Spacial Dynamics Institute and the Camphill Social Therapy Training. Her love of clowning led her to create a Village Circus of 100 people where she discovered the potential of community renewal and growth through Circus Arts. In addition to being the mother of four, she teaches dance, therapeutic movement, Spacial Dynamics, acro-yoga, circus arts and clowning to kids, adults and special needs groups throughout the Berkshire/Taconic area. Laura is a member of Walking the Dog Theater’s Off Leash! improv ensemble www.wtdtheater.org and trains in clowning with Nose to Nose of the UK.
